Smart Home Technology Trends in 2020

Smart Home Technology Trends 2020

The latest trends in home technology are making our homes interactive and automated. Today devices can hold conversations, close window blinds, and turn on lights making life more convenient for homeowners. Current trends in smart home technology are continually changing as consumers decide which devices and features they will add to their homes.

The smart home technology market is evolving at a breakneck pace, regardless of which devices grow popularity smart home tech is here to stay. Experts are predicting the home tech market to see double-digit market growth through 2023.

Advancements in Machine Learning technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are making it possible for a new array of products. These latest products come to market at a price that many homeowners find attractive and are willing to purchase. Devices like Amazon Echo, becoming commonplace in most homes has opened the door for more smart technology finding places in our daily lives. With the acceptance of smart devices and low prices on devices, it is priming the market for rapid market growth in the coming years.

Let’s take a glance at a few of the latest trending technologies for smart home devices.

Voice Controlled Devices

The voice feature of Alexa is not being used for the purpose as initially intended, making Amazon orders and phone calls. Instead, they are using it as a source for information or as a control center for other devices. Music, weather, alarm clock, and entertainment are common uses. Instead of asking Alexa, “Alexa, tell me a joke,” the number one command for the device or one of the other top requests like “what’s the weather,” or “game scores.” Additional capabilities see less than 50% of use by users. But with the integration of smart home tech, this is expected to change. As homeowners learn, their voice-controlled speaker has better use as a control center for your home.

Globally, there are an estimated 100 million homes with at least one smart speaker. Widespread usage has created a substantial infrastructure to integrate other smart technology devices. In the US, it is estimated that 50% of households have one or more smart speakers. In addition to Alexa, Google’s Home can also integrate and control smart home gadgets.

An additional 25 to 35% of consumers are interested in purchasing smart speakers in the next year. These numbers far surpass the trend we are seeing in other tech devices like carbon dioxide monitors, security systems, smart lighting, smart thermostats, and outlets. There is a growing interest in smart kitchen appliances. It is still not a big part of the market.

Home Automation

With many homeowners separately trying to find enough hours in a day to get everyday tasks completed, consumers are readily accepting the latest automated home solutions. Daily tasks like making coffee, opening blinds, turning on lights, or vacuuming the house can now be automated.

Picture your alarm going off, blinds automatically open partway, the temperature of the home adjusts, and the coffeemaker in the kitchen starts brewing fresh coffee — all before you get out of bed.

Smart Kitchens Appliances

As home technology advances, we can expect to see more smart kitchen appliances. The kitchen is one of the rooms in the home that has seen little advancement in smart tech. This is all changing as Wi-Fi-connected kitchen appliances, and other home tech devices are becoming more common.

Whirlpool is introducing its Yummly-powered smart cooking technology. They are offering Yummly on a wide range of Wi-Fi-enabled kitchen devices. With a few simple voice commands, homeowners can find recipes by simple saying what ingredients they have on hand. Additionally, it will download video tutorials and display them on its monitor. The latest smart built-in oven in Whirlpool’s offering is the Connected Hub Wall Oven. The stove uses an interactive LCD interface in place of the standard glass oven door.

Samsung is offering the Family Hub refrigerator in its latest line refrigerators, using an AI-enhanced LCD screen, to display information making the refrigerator notepad a thing of the past. Samsung incorporated a digital assistant into the fridge. Bixby uses voice ID technology to deliver tailored information to each family member.

Smart Surfaces

GHSP, a supplier of premium appliances, is bringing its Smart Backsplash to the market. The backsplash has a touchscreen that allows homeowners to set up cooking controls, find recipes online, play streaming music, and more from almost any location in the kitchen. While the backsplash is not in use, it can display a still image, similar to a digital picture frame.

Better Sleep With Smart Lighting

One of the fastest-growing segments of the home tech market is smart lighting. In the past, smart lighting manufacturers were more focused on merely setting mood lighting or turn on/off lights. Recently the emphasis has shifted to managing circadian rhythms. By tying in the lights with your smart hub, lighting adjustments are made incrementally throughout the evening. As the night progresses, the lights are dimmed slowly to reduce the homeowners’ exposure to artificial light. Overexposure to light will lead to adverse effects on your circadian rhythm, resulting in sleep loss or poor sleep. With reduced exposure to artificial light, you will feel rested in the morning resulting from a much better night of sleep.

Smart Home Cameras

WiFi cameras are nothing new to the market. Unfortunately, past performance has been unreliable at accurately identifying movement and going off because of wind, birds, or small animals. By incorporating Artificial Intelligence into the latest smart camera, false alarms are becoming a thing of the past.

With the use of “smart imagining,” the camera system can identify a human from other movements created by animals, cars, and wind. Some systems are sophisticated enough to identify an individual’s identity and match it with a home’s residents. They are allowing for better identification of potential intruders.

Deep Sentinel is using AI imaging in their AI-enhanced camera. The system is monitored by a live video surveillance team that can communicate with any unidentified individuals by way of the camera’s built-in two-way communication.

Smart Home Technology In New Construction

Tech giants and several national home builders have teamed up to build new homes with built-in smart technology. KB Homes is teaming up with Google and offering Google Home and Home Mini Speaker for its control center. Google Home will be able to control the numerous home devices provided in their new construction. While Lennar Homes are teaming up with Amazon to offer Amazon Echo and Dot in all their homes for the control center. Like Google Home, Alexa will control the full range of smart home devices offered in their new home builds.

Building smart technology into the home’s original design is economical and cost-effective. Building smart home tech into new homes will be the trend for new construction moving forward. While many home tech devices require no major installation, they are simply plugging in and connect to existing Wi-FI. These devices could be added at any time during or after construction, While others can require some significant remodeling if you were to install it in an existing home. When installing the same devices in development, there tends to far less work and cost involved. Also, the builder is finding that the price to incorporate smart devices in new homes is insignificant.

Conclusion

Home technology and home automation will continue to see rapid growth in the coming years. The number of new products expected to hit the market will increase every year and make the market even more competitive. This is good news for consumers as this will reduce prices for these devices. The home technology market has many years of growth ahead of it. It will be interesting to see what new devices we will incorporate into our homes in the future.
