Many of you who claim that those who do not smoke can simply walk away have APPARENTLY never lived in a city in your life. If the street is crowded, and you must walk a couple blocks down the street with at least 5 people smoking IN PUBLIC around crowds of people outside every damn block, you can't avoid it, or simply take a "couple steps back". The worst is when around 10 people are waiting at a bus stop, and someone just pulls out a cigarette and disturbs everyone else without a second thought. Often they even stand so that the wind blowing past them is reaching everyone else. Now.. the smokers here would simply say "oh.. everyone else can just move away, i don't care" or the 10 people waiting at the bus stop can push the smoker in front of a passing car :)

Why quit? Smoke is not a gas - it's a solid. Think of road tar building up inside of you. Why do you smoke? Because you give yourself alkaline nicotine to counteract acids, like after you eat. Your body can do that, itself. But since you do it now, for your body, your body just quit doing it. It depends on you to give it alkaline. And if you don't get it, you cry like a baby. So be a man, and follow the simple and free method of quitting. Count to 3. Stop for 3 seconds, then 3 minutes, then 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years. There is only one tough one. That is, 3 days. After that, you're home free.

Your comment is way too long, and I'm definitely not reading it.
My question to you is, WHY would you want to smoke?
It doesn't taste good.
It doesn't smell good.
It causes major health problems and can lead to death.
Not to mention stinking up your home, car, your breath, yellow teeth, and social shunning. Nobody likes a smoker. Smoking is unattractive, and serves no purpose whatsoever. What purpose does sucking on a stick, then blowing out smoke, serve?
romalias on April 24th, 2008, 2:11 am
Are you kidding me?
It's not about being aloud to smoke around other people
It's about being free all those other people have just as much freedome.
They don't have to be there I'm not saying that smoking should be alowed anywhere you want.
But for cripes sake they are pushing to take it away all together and if we are in a smoking establishment then guess what?
Anyone who also is there is choosing to be there.
The goverment is simply taking away this right this freedom of expression.
There are smoking and nonsmoking establishments in most places back east and i'm am soon moving back there where my constitution is still intact.
If you feal that the pollutants are harming you you don't need to be there and even in places where smoking is still legal they are required to have appropriate ventilation between the smoking and nonsmoking facilities.
It's is purely you'r option wether you choose to stand next to me while I smoke.
You don't like it take a few steps back or goto the nonsmoking place down the road.
Just like if it was a christian restraunt "this is just ramble here never heard of one before" And inside that restaraunt they had a preacher permanantly on hand preeching you wouldn't be there right?
But that is his and the establishments freedome of speech you wouldn't impose upon them would you?
Just because you don't like what they are doing?
If you answer that question yes then ask yourself this question what things do you do or say that others might find offensive?
With millions of people out there there has to e something now imagine the goverment banned you from doing it.
now that it's you it dosn't feel right does it?
Frodosringfinger on April 24th, 2008, 1:55 am
It's a good thing about the smoking ban in Baltimore and stuff. Think about what you're doing. Ok, you're over the fact that you know you're harming yourself while smoking, but think of the people around you. Its a safety issue. Being allowed to smoke and blow your pollution around other people is not far from murder, let alone suicide.
romalias on April 24th, 2008, 1:49 am
It is unfortunate that people choose to press this issue against the will of our founding fathers who once founded this country on the principle that every man be equal and subject to his own means and freedoms.
I really hate to see people pressing the smoking issue here in washington you can't even smoke in a bar anymore.
No public facility is allowed to be smoking.
They are taking away our constitutional rights and freedomes once upon a time we where segregated but equal now we are together but no longer free.
To smoke or not to smoke this is a choice that each of us should be able to take into our own account.
If an establishment chooses to allow smoking that is their choice be it good or bad that is a freedom granted by the constitution.
If you don't want the second hand smoke you alternately have the choice not to go to that establishment.
I beleive that washington and california both are jumping on the wrong political band wagon and eventually this attitude of self imposing political envirmental or even personal issues on the public as a whole will cause an insurgence of the people.
At some point it will go beyond what they have allready taken away if things continue in this manner, legislatures no longer listening to the people vice presidents who don't listen to the supreme court even.
It is a sad day indeed we are becoming more and more like what we ran away from.
Next it will be illegal to stand on the street corner and preech jesus if you want to do so.
That is also covered by the consitution, police beating their captors before bringing them in shootings left and right and all people can think about is themselves.
"I don't feal safe lets give the goverment more power"
This is slowly killing our society as we know it if you give all the power to the goverment what makes you think the people who are in power actually have your intrests in mind?
Bush is a prime example in the case of our newest president who is more like nixon then most people know.
Guess where he has all his money invested in?
The oil market have you noticed he hasn't done a thing about the ever increasing oil prices since he's been in office?
Then of course we have cheney and the fact that we have been at war with a coutry for 6 years and at no point have produced any evidence of a real reason for the war.
but if you look a little deeper you will find that cheny owns a company which has a host of contracts with the u.s. military what better way to line your pocets then to keep our country at war?
I suggest everyone who reads this look into Ni4D which is a political movment which is trying to change the way things work right now in the method of checks and balances before introducing new legislature the public is never asked anyone noticed?
Though it effects every one of us we don't have a say in the matter.
We can only hope that the people we nominate to represent us take the approach we want them to, which is rarely the case with politicians lining their pocets with Corperation dollars and doing what the big guy wants because it pays better.
Ni4D's intended to bring that power back to us before any legislature may be passed it has to come to a vote by the people making this country once again "By The People For The people"
If you don't want to grow old in a world where choices have become a luxory rather then a right, where the goverment can impose upon you'r everyday freedomes at their whims.
I suggest you all look into this especially those of you out there who are in either washington or california and are smokers.

I do know what Secondhand smoke is and I'm well aware of all the chemicals in tobacco and the smoke that's inhaled.
First - When the smoke enters the air, it disperses among the wide amount of space available. Therefore - when inhaling the passive smoke, you barely breathe in any of the chemicals (Unless you're breathing directly above the side-stream smoke, even then it'll still not have the full potential as if you were taking a drag off a cigarette.)
Second - when the smoker inhales and exhales, the chemicals were mostly already absorbed into the lungs and bloodstream, etc.
Third - The point is, it'd take a lot of passive smoke inhalation to even come close to receiving the same amount of chemicals a smoker gets in just one cigarette.
Fourth - Yes, I am still fine from all the second-hand smoke my father created. Perfectly healthy. I've been around it since I was a baby - 17 years of being around second-hand smoke. Still perfectly fine. Matter of time? Nah - Something would have happened in the 17 years of it if it were true.
Fifth - There are a lot of cancer causing chemicals around everywhere you go. Second-hand smoke may increase the risk, but no more than any of the other things you are around everyday. (You wouldn't believe how many signs there are in California that state: "Warning: This are contains a chemical known to California to cause Cancer.") I'm sure other states have them too.
That is all.
Clint on February 6th, 2008, 1:29 pm
oh look that house is on fire "think of all the chemicals in there" and your saying why don't they just stop burning!? they shouldn't be allowed to burn! oh my god that wheat field is on fire that poor rat just got fried and i'm breathing in his second hand smoked fur. You should stop taling now.
angel on February 5th, 2008, 9:44 am
Ha , it seems that you dont know actually what secondhand smoke is . There is no lack of research on the damage caused by secondhand smoking . HERE IS A PROOF MY BUDDY
THE CONSTITUENTS AND PROPERTIES OF TOBACCO SMOKE
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals in the form of particles and gases. Many potentially toxic gases are present in higher concentrations in sidestream smoke than in mainstream smoke. And nearly 85% of the smoke in a room results from sidestream smoke.
The particulate phase includes tar (itself composed of many chemicals), nicotine, benzene and benzopyrene.
The gas phase includes carbon monoxide, ammonia, dimethylnitrosamine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and acrolein.
Some of these particles have shown to have irritant properties and known as carcinogens.
When your dad smokes , you are breathing in over 4000 chemicals which can cause cancers . Are you really fine ? i doubt . May be its just a matter of time my sweetheart .
Mörder on February 2nd, 2008, 9:15 pm
Haha - Wake up? I'm stealing other people's basic freedom of choice? I am not. Plus - I'm not even a smoker. That's right. I don't smoke yet I support the right for someone to smoke. It's your choice if you want in front of someone who is smoking. Completely your choice. Taking away something is actually cutting out someone's freedom.
Look upon the history - Without tobacco, we wouldn't have developed an economy. (Warning: This might be Offensive, but I do not mean any offense at all) African Americans wouldn't be here(Tobacco was the reason slaves were brought over to work in the fields, cotton was one of the others as well - Don't misconstrue) and we wouldn't have learned tolerance and equal rights if it wasn't for Martin Luther King.
A lot of history was founded due to Tobacco if you think about it. I'm not saying that Second-hand smoke doesn't cause cancer. I'm saying that there is NO PROOF. Find me proof, I'll believe it. When there isn't any - you shouldn't have the liberty to state that it does. Only state something that you are able to back up. (As for it most likely NOT doing anything - I know bartenders who've worked in a bar which allows smoking, working for over 40 years there, and he's perfectly healthy. My Dad smoked around me, I'm fine. Friends and everything around smoking, they're all fine. )
Bring me proof - and then we'll talk. For now, Shut the hell up.
Ex-smoker on February 1st, 2008, 3:04 pm
I quit smoking - and its the best thing I could have done! yes - its VERY tough - but its one filthy SELFISH habit. It does cause cancer for yourself and those around you. You're in denial if you dont believe that.
"People who walk into bars for example: Getting angry at the smokers inside and wanting to get smoke banned in the place - is the most selfish thing anyone can do."
Wake up buddy - you are stealing other people's basic freedom of choice to a healthy lifestyle.
Mörder on February 1st, 2008, 9:11 am
First of all - There is no proof that secondhand smoking does any harm to anyone. They are all based on statistics. And those are concluded by finding people who died from heart disease and other complications associated with Tobacco smoking and say, "Hey - They lived with a smoker; it must be secondhand smoke!"
There is absolutely no legit proof. Banning smoking would be a violation of freedom. You cannot be forced be in secondhand smoke. It's as simple as walking away from it. People who walk into bars for example: Getting angry at the smokers inside and wanting to get smoke banned in the place - is the most selfish thing anyone can do. You do not have to go to that bar. And even then, if you care about your health - why are you drinking? That's just an example though.
Grow up people and learn common sense. And before you go off saying anything. Get the facts, and learn for yourself instead of listening to the biased media.
Angel on February 1st, 2008, 5:17 am
Somebody seems to think that the ban on smoking is a violation of their freedom ... But dont you think that the secondhand smoke you breathe out will badly affect the others ? I am forced to be a secondhand smoker and it IS certainly a violation of my right and freedom .... Dont be selfish and you should consider other's feeling as well
Darri on January 30th, 2008, 12:22 pm
Shit whats with the bad spelling! REALLY!
Right, down to buisness. Bangsi I can see that you are from Iceland so I will start by attacking you, where do you get your numbers, and where is the proof? If you can assert something without proof then I can dismiss it.
You get proof and then we will talk.
And smoking is unhealthy, sure not one or 2 but in the long run its bad for you, I mean if you dont care about your body at all why not smoke crack, atleast we could laugh at you while you are out dancing nude in the rain screaming for armageddon.
Darri out, you just got owned by a teenager with grammar.
Smoker on January 29th, 2008, 4:45 am
I smoke, I don´t want to quit. Not yet at least. Perhaps one day I will find the urge to not destroy my body. But then colesterol destroys you in the end.. No matter what you do, your dead, dead, Dying..
Bangsi on January 27th, 2008, 3:42 pm
ok wow some people really do have their heads up their asses... have you ever heard of personal freedom, the right to do as you please, or in other words Liberty, If I want to smoke, I do it if I don't want to smoke I dont, who the hell are you to try to tell me what to do or not to do? who gave you the fucking right to chastise me over things that don't concern you in the slightest, sencondhand or, passive smoking is not as hazardous as you think, when a person breathes the smoke directly from the butt of a sigarette and holds it in his lungs for about 1-2 seconds nearly 95% of the toxic shit in the cigarette is absorbed... so 5% of near non-harmful air... mmm-not so dangerous at all is it? It takes about 5 million cigarettes to effectively ruin your lungs... if that's a pack a day then thats about 65 years, now imagine that as second hand smoking It'd take you about 450 million cigarettes to actually get you near the vicinity of probable lung cancer that's some 350 years.
so if you want to go ahead and whine about second hand smoking be my guest, but the only thing that's deterring you from actually liking smoking is the smell. that one I'll give to you, it doesn't smell nice but the effect of a cigarette is well worth the smell to some, get your head out of your asses people
Sten on January 27th, 2008, 11:35 am
